What are the big differences between the trap bar and straight bar deadlifts? 🤔If we freeze frame the lift off we can see two things in body position, a slightly forward knee position and more upright trunk with the trap bar vs the straight bar.📝
.
This means the hips are working harder in a straight bar deadlift as there is a longer hip moment arm comparatively – the horizontal distance between the barbell center of mass and the hip joint.🤯
.
On the other hand, the trap bar will spread the demand of lifting the weight more evenly between the hips and knees, and place less flexion torque loading on the low back.✅
.
This means, for someone returning from a back injury that can’t tolerate high flexion torques, a trap bar deadlift may be a more optimal choice for returning to deadlifting.✅
.
However if a healthy athlete uses good technique and optimal loading schemes, both variations of the deadlift can be safely performed and should not be feared.🙌🏼
.
Shout out to @eleikosport for the great equipment featured in today post including the new Öppen deadlift bar🙏🏼
